During the warmer months, a deck can effectively expand the functional area of your home, providing ample space for activities such as dining, lounging, and grilling. Additionally, decks offer an opportunity to connect with nature on your property, allowing you to incorporate elements like patio furniture, bird feeders, and potted plants.
The variety of decks available is extensive, with limitless designs to choose from. Each deck can be unique, influenced by factors such as the shape of your home, the elevation of the land, and various other considerations. Supreme Fencing is here to assist you in both the design process and addressing any concerns you may have while planning your project. Now, let's explore several different options for decking.
Ground Level Decks are typically less than twelve inches above the ground and one of the most popular choices. It’s recommended to use deck blocks or similar to get the deck off the ground to stay away from moisture and keep the wood dry.
A Raised Deck or Balcony Deck, usually comes out of a second story and is defined by the structure of your home. Raised Decks are supported by posts which are set in concrete at least 2 ft in the ground.
A hillside deck is a strategically placed deck that is built on a slope. Just because you have a sloped yard doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the benefits of a deck, ultimately a deck could give you a better space to enjoy the backyard.
A split level deck can actually be built to give you more space than what is really there, whether it’s two stories, or simply different levels on the ground. Two separate foundations or platforms will have to be built, but it can really turn a small space into something great.
Gazebo Decks can be a great addition and offer more space for the Gazebo. Whether that Gazebo is in the center or we just build around it, a deck is an awesome addition to the yard.
A Wraparound Deck is exactly that, we can start on one side and wrap around to another. Decks can extend and wrap in any direction if desired. If you want more space for entertainment, a wraparound deck is a perfect option.
A deck around a pool or hot tub can really make that space look amazing. A Deck can also extend the entry or exit for a pool or hot tub, especially if they are raised above ground. Composite wood materials are popular in this application due to steady exposure to moisture.
Free Standing Decks are built in an open area and are stand-alone foundations that don’t have any structure supporting them. Free Standing Decks are perfect for an outdoor kitchen area or entertainment space. You can kind of isolate the area so that you don’t disturb others

Before installing a deck, it is important to consider factors such as the purpose of the deck, the space available, and the desired features to include. For example, if you intend to host get-togethers, consider a gazebo deck! If you have a pool in your backyard, consider a composite wood pool deck, which is intended for environments with steady exposure to moisture.
In Louisiana, a building permit is required for most residential construction work. In general, if your deck is higher than 30 inches off the ground, you will need a permit.

Popular Questions
Composite wood decking has a very low maintenance level. The composite material consists of recycled plastic and wood chips or sawdust. The composite decking is more expensive than cedar and other types of wood, but once it's down, it won't rot, splinter or twist.
The three common choices when it comes to wood decks are redwood, cedar and pressure-treated wood. Redwood and cedar are both naturally insect and rot resistant and will have a longer life than treated pine. There are many other hardwood options as well, depending on budget.
Wood decks can last up to 15 years with the proper maintenance, it’s recommended to paint, stain or seal the wood to increase the longevity.
The decking will last 25 to 30 years longer, it’s weather resistant, will not rot and resistant to insects.
It is a good idea to seal your treated lumber after installing, you can wait for the wood to dry out and then add the sealer, both oil-based and water-based exterior wood stains are available which may contain water repellents, fungicides, and algaecides for longer life.
Composite decking does not typically get hotter than pressure-treated wood, but like anything that sits in the sun, the temperature will increase, especially with no shade. Lighter colored boards tend to be slightly cooler than darker composite boards.
Pressure washing is not recommended on composite decks. Too much pressure or getting too close to the surface can ruin the boards. Because composite decking is softer than wood, etching can become an issue.
Most brands of composite decking have a textured finish, to help make them slip-resistant. Composite decks in the south don’t tend to have icy conditions but it is possible and this could cause some slippery conditions.
Composites aren't designed to be painted like wood planks, it kinda defeats the purpose of buying a composite, but if you want to paint the deck boards make sure it’s properly cleaned, prepped and primed. A topcoat of porch paint can then restore beauty to your deck and extend its life for several additional years.
Hose your deck off thoroughly with a water hose, if you need to remove stubborn dirt mix some warm water and mild soap and use a soft bristled brush to lightly scrub the area.
