When it comes to choosing the type of fencing that best suits your needs, we encourage you to explore all the possibilities that wood fencing offers. Wood fences are the most popular fence choice amongst homeowners and business owners and are by far one of the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and versatile fencing options on the market today. Not to mention, wood fences can be built in several different designs, sizes, cuts, colors, and types of wood, so no matter what your vision is, Supreme Fencing can build it!
One amazing benefit of choosing a wood fence is the different designs available for you to choose from. Some of the most popular designs include:
Allows air and light to pass through but offers some privacy
Allows air and light to pass through, does not offer much privacy, and is best for gardens, patios, and decks
Offers a more modern look and is best for front yards and gardens
Typically 3-4 feet high and is best for front yards and gardens
Taller than most fences and offers security and privacy
Typically used for property lines or penning livestock
While these are some of the most popular fence styles, we also offer california fences, flat top fences, gothic picket fences, rail fences, farm fences, and much more! Additionally, all of these types of wood fences can be stained or painted, giving you even more customization options to make your vision come to life. Painting or staining your wooden fence also protects the wood from UV light exposure and moisture, which prolongs the lifespan of the wood!
Once you’ve decided on the style of fencing that best suits your home or business, you may be wondering, what are the benefits of a wood fence?
First and foremost, when deciding to have a fence installed, what it is going to cost is always front and center of our minds. Surprisingly, wood fences are one of the more affordable fencing options available today. Wood fences are considerably less expensive than aluminum fences, wrought iron fences, and vinyl fences, and the average treated wooden fence can last decades with nothing more than an occasional wash, which makes it one of the easiest and cost-effective fencing options available.
Another great benefit of choosing a wood fence is that wood fence installations are amongst the easiest fences to install, which can reduce building time and get your fence installed much faster than other types of fencing. The build time of wooden fences will simply depend on the size of fencing your home requires.
An important question you may be also be wondering when considering a wood fence is what effect will my wood fence have long term on the environment? Well, since wood fences are a natural product of our environment, they are very eco-friendly and can be treated with eco-stabilizers and preservatives, which protect them from swelling or termite damage without harming the soil or groundwater. Then, once your wood fence has reached its life potential, you can easily disassemble it and dispose of it naturally.
With so many different choices of type of wood, styles, colors, and designs, wood fence installations are one of the most versatile types of fencing you can choose for your home or business. Choosing wood fencing means you can get extra peace of mind with privacy, while still having something beautiful or unique to dress up your property. Popular Questions
The type of wood can quickly increase the price of your wood fence. Pressure treated pine will be the cheapest option, but you may have to give up some quality to do so. Generally speaking the low grade pressure treated fence pickets are not the best quality but will do the job, but you may have to pick through the pile to find some good straight boards. Pressure treated lumber will be your best option for post and runners, but you may choose to upgrade your pickets to cedar or even cypress. The upgrade on the wood could increase the longevity of your fence by 10+ years. Over time, quality wood fencing will require fewer repairs and is less likely to need replacement. If, however, you're looking to move to another home, it may not be worth the investment to purchase a long-lasting wood.
An average wood fence can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years, depending on the quality of the installation, type of wood, and how well it's maintained.
The most popular woods used for fencing are pressure treated pine and cedar, but you do have a couple other options like cypress or redwood, although it could depend on where you live in order to buy other materials.
Treated pine is the most affordable wood for a fence, it’s a softer wood which makes for easy installation, but still provides a durable and long lasting option. Pressure treated pine will be more durable than regular pine, but will last much longer due to the additives.
One thing to consider when buying your wood is the environment around you. Moisture and UV light can take a toll on the wood, but another major obstacle is insect infestation. If the wood you choose does not have a natural repellent like cedar for example or is not pressure treated, termites could take over and eat away at your fence, leaving it to rot and fall apart.
Treated Lumber or Pressure-treated lumber as some call it, is commonly used for exterior projects. One common use is for fencing, but just because you buy treated wood doesn’t mean you won’t run into some issues. The preservatives added to treated lumber do provide resistance to certain types of decay, but they cannot prevent damage caused by constant exposure to moisture and direct sunlight, although it does slow the process.
If the wood has been treated properly, the lifespan of the fence will greatly increase. You can expect, on average, for pine fencing to last up to about 20 years and cedar in upwards of 40 years.
Cedar will remain in good condition, last longer and require less maintenance than pine if installed above the ground. Pressure-treated pine is less likely to decay if planted in soil, so it’s recommended to use treated pine posts.
A stain, sealer or paint will help seal out the moisture, and help prevent rotting and slow the weathering process and extend the life of the fence. Choose a stain or sealant with a UV inhibitor to help keep the wood from turning gray. After installation it’s a good idea to let the wood dry for about a week before applying a stain or sealant.
Any wood, even treated wood, will eventually dry out, crack, and turn grey if left exposed to the natural elements. To keep your wood fence looking its best, finish it with a clear water-repellent sealer, a stain, or paint and protect your investment.
Pressure-treated is a process in which a solution of water and preservative agents are infused into the wood under high pressure. This allows the solution to penetrate deep into the wood and help protect the lumber and extend its life.
The active ingredients commonly used in treated wood are alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ), copper azole (CA) or micronized copper azole (MCA). These compounds react with the wood fibers to slow natural decay and have properties to resist termites, fungus, moisture and other elements that promote rot and cause structural decay. For Example, this process enables pressure-treated fence posts, to withstand years of being embedded in soil. Because pressure-treated wood absorbs a significant amount of liquid during the manufacturing process, it typically arrives to stores still wet and can take up to several weeks to completely dry out. The preservatives remain in the lumber after the water evaporates.
Decks and fences are the most common uses for treated wood but it is ideal for a variety of applications. Pressure-treated decking boards can extend the longevity of wooden walkways, freshwater docks, accessibility ramps and other outdoor structures that are exposed to the elements. Other uses for treated wood include raised garden beds, stair stringers, wooden swing sets, pergolas and arbors. Pressure-treated wood should not be used for any indoor applications.
Before you paint or stain treated lumber make sure the wood has properly dried out, to test this you can sprinkle some water onto the lumber, if it absorbs then you are ready for paint and stain, if not wait a few more days and try again. Once the wood is dry you are safe to apply the stain or paint to the treated wood fence.
